More than 30 years ago, the first Woodstock Chime was created by founder and owner Garry Kvistad from an aluminum lawn chair he found in a landfill. As a professional musician and instrument designer, he was fascinated by the Scales of Olympos, a 7th century pentatonic scale that can’t be played on a modern piano. Garry had the idea to cut and tune the lawn chair chime tubes to the exact frequency of the ancient scale. The resulting Chimes of Olympos was the first Woodstock Chime and is still one of their bestselling wind chimes. In addition to chimes, the company also distributes a line of award-winning musical instruments and toys called the Woodstock Music Collection.
The brand was recently spotted at Plow & Hearth promoting their Piccolo Chime. When chime shopping, one of the prerequisites is to give them a touch to hear their melodic tones. Since the Piccolo Chime is Woodstock’s smallest chime, they were able to create a ‘chime before you buy’ counter display by designing the right side of the riser with a void to accommodate a live wind chime for shoppers to try. Flute wire was used internally to keep the riser and chime in an upright position.
Woodstock Chimes offers a unique variety of high quality, affordable musical gifts from around the world that inspire, entertain and bring pleasure to people of all ages. We design and sell the world-famous Woodstock Chimes and distribute a line of award-winning musical instruments and toys called the Woodstock Music Collection. My wife, Diane, and I started Woodstock Percussion, Inc. in 1979. We are a family-owned business located in New York’s beautiful Hudson Valley. In addition to being the founder and owner of Woodstock Chimes, I am a professional musician. I tour and record with the world-renowned percussion group, NEXUS, as well as with Steve Reich. My background in music explains my strong commitment to fine tuning and great sound – which is what makes our products appealing to everyone and unique to the gift industry. I am proud of every product we make and hope you’ll enjoy them as much as I do.
